Bates Mill StoreAbigail Adams Matelasse Bedspread
Description
The Abigail Adams Bedspread was originally introduced by Bates in 1976 during
the celebration of the United States Bicentennial. This old-fashioned bedspread
design was inspired by the handwoven cotton quilts that President John Adams
used while serving abroad as a diplomat in France.
Many consider the Abigail Adams to be our most beautiful matelasse bedspread,
and if nothing else, it is certainly the most ornate. This cotton bedspread
features a central floral bust framed by French scrollwork that is further
elevated by finely detailed accents throughout.
The Abigail Adams Bedspread has also been known in the past as "First Lady's
Choice" or simply "Abigail."

Bates Mill StoreMartha Washington's Choice Bedspread
Description
The Martha Washington’s Choice Bedspread is the most iconic terry bedspread ever
produced by Bates. Released in 1940 under the name “George Washington’s Choice”,
it was the first hobnail bedspread to ever be woven on a mechanical loom.
This vintage bedspread pattern is a replica of the handwoven candlewick
bedspread that George Washington lovingly gave to his bride, Martha, on their
wedding day. It quickly became a household favorite and continues to be our
number one seller today.
The steadfast favorite has been in continuous production for over 80 years and
during that time has also been labeled “America’s First” and simply “George
Washington”.

Bates Mill StoreCape Cod Cotton Matelasse Bedspread
Description
Featuring a pattern of lattice work and scallop shells, the Cape Cod Cotton
Matelasse Bedspread is a heavyweight design favored for its subtle coastal theme
that fits any decor.
Originally introduced as a flat jacquard in the 1970s, this design was
discontinued when Bates slowed their weaving of “flat jacqs” in favor of the
more popular matelasse bedspreads. In the early 2000s, the Cape Cod was
reintroduced as the matelasse bedspread we continue to produce today.

Bates Mill StoreColonial Rose Cotton Matelasse Bedspread
Description
The Colonial Rose Bedspread features an all-over floral and palm leaf pattern
that carefully balances the organic with the geometric.
This cotton bedspread was originally introduced in the 1950s as a classic
matelasse but was later transitioned into production as a flat jacquard quilt
called "Brittany" in the 1970s. Flat jacquards, lacking the signature “puff” of
a matelasse bedspread, did not take off in popularity and so the pattern was
discontinued.
In the early 2000’s, Bates resurrected this vintage bedspread as a lightweight
matelasse in an effort to provide an affordable option for those customers
seeking the quality of the matelasse bedspread but in a lighter weight fabric.

Bates Mill StoreQueen Elizabeth Matelasse Bedspread
Description
The Queen Elizabeth Bedspread was first introduced by Bates in 1953, in
commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. The design was also inspired
by an intricate quilt originating from the Elizabethan Era, so the name was
fitting in more ways than one.
This vintage-inspired matelassé bedspread was the first of its kind to be woven
on a mechanical loom, and it has been in continuous production for over 60 years
(second in age only to the our classic Martha Washington’s Choice Bedspread).
This cotton matelassé bedspread commands attention with an elegant center
medallion and structured framework surrounded by soft florals. The iconic design
has also been known in the past as the "Elizabethan Court."
